| vgd's Full Review: Sharp Actius A250 (PCA250) PC Notebook |
The sharp has pluses and minuses:
Pluses:
Excellent contrast display
Light weight
Heat management
Integrated ethernet, VGA ports
Small power brick
Cool appearance
Minuses:
Keyboard size and function-shifted cursor keys
Nonstandard cursor key layout
Touchpad overly sensitive
Frequent boot and shutdown crashes (despite the usual Win 98 tuning)
Interminable boot and return-from-standby times
Horrible speaker
Short battery life
Limited on-line support material: Knowledge base is rudimentary
This box replaced a Toshiba 3020. The Toshiba got too hot to use when on for prolonged periods. The actius has no such problems.
I carry my laptop with me to several work locations: Weight is paramount. The battery life is limited, but that is expected with the small number of cells in the built in battery.
The touchpad is twitchy. I find the cursor randomly moving with some frequency when I inadvertently bump it. Big pain.
Accessories: I have had no problems with a USB CD-ROM drive on this machine. It has also worked well on several 100-TX networks.
Support: I cannot comment on support: The machine has not broken (although newsgroups reflect reports of hard drive problems).
Summary: If the keyboard were laid out better and the machine had better suspend/resume characteristics, it would be nearly perfect.
Best purchased by: For the mobile professional who values weight over all else, this machine is a good consideration.
