The True Method Of Creating A Partition!Jun 08 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Ok, so you just bought that new DELL or GATEWAY P-III 850Mhz PC, but you dont want to keep around all that junk they install on the hard drive and why the heck did they create two partitions on your one drive; a C:\ at 12GB and a D:\ at 18GB. (Shouldn't it be the other way around, you ask yourself? The answer is yes!) Not only that but you have a couple parts you plan on putting into the new machine yourself (ie CDRW Drive, FireWire card, Ethernet card, etc). The best way to start is to RE-PARTITION your hard drive. To do this, you will need to Windows 98 Start-Up Disk and you want to make sure that it has the file "FORMAT.COM" on it. The follow these easy steps: 1) Boot off the floppy. 2) Type FDISK 3) Enter Y for maximum size 4) Select Delete Partition 5) Confirm 6) Reboot off floppy. 7) Type FDISK 8) Enter Y for maximum size 9) Hit 1 for create physical partition 10) Hit 2 to set it active 11) Reboot from floppy 12) Type FORMAT C: /s/u Next you will need to do a clean install of Windows 98. Make sure all part you want in the machine are installed (except USB devices.) USB devices should be added individually after Windows 98 is up and running. 1) Reboot from Floppy Selecting CD-ROM Support 2) C: 3) MKDIR c:\windows 4) cd windows 5) MKDIR options 6) cd options 7) MKDIR cabs 8) cd cabs 9) Insert Windows 98 CD ROM 10) D: (or whatever letter the CD drive was assigned) 11) cd win98 12) copy *.* c:\windows\options\cabs 13) C: 14) setup /ie /is /id 15) The rest is self explanatory! Install all drivers as you are prompted to do so and you will be up and running in no time. Please Note This is for people who are experienced in using these commands. DO NOT try this if you do not have your data backed up! |
