The computer I had before the one I currently own was so slow by today's standards, It's hard to comprehend. The graphics were primitive, the internet was sssssllloooowww, and the sound system was crappy. Now, one of the first things I noticed about my new computer was the amazing sound.
I have the the TurtleBeach Montego II PCI sound card installed in my computer. It uses the A3D technology to make some great sound. Not only is the quality of the sound itself amazingly clear, but the 3D effects are great. I noticed this the best with the game "Half-Life." You can hear sound effects coming from all directions! Its amazing! If a monster is coming up behind you, the sound card makes the sound of the monster sound like its behind you. This sound card puts a sphere of sound all around you, and totally immerses you in the game. Now that I have this card, I love it! I dont know how I could play without it. Also, since at the time of this review, it has been out for a little while, it will be available for very cheap.
