With the advent such technological advances as we have seen here in the latter part of the twentieth century and entering into the twenty-first century, buying a computer can be tricky business, especially when one feels the need to keep up with the Jones'. Nowadays, a computer can become ancient as fast as Oprah gains and loses weight. By the time you plug your brand new computer into the electrical socket, another one hits the market that is bigger and faster, making your new purchase look like mince meat. Not soon afterwards, it has become a thing of the past. By the looks of things, one thing stands out boldly: The Jones' aren't slowing down and you're never going to catch up. That being said, my notebook that I bought a little more than a year ago has become fossil material for entrance into the computer historical museum. It is a Toshiba Satellite 4005 CDS, part of Toshiba's family-oriented line of computer products (the other being the Tecra, the advanced version). It has the Pentium II 244mhz chip, contains 32 mbs of RAM, and has a 4.0 gb hard drive. The screen is a color-bright display, and after attempting to play Quake II, I urge all you to buy active-matrix equipped screens. The notebook runs fairly well and has been fairly durable. But after experiencing a Gateway 2000 laptop, I am envious of the raw power and speed that my laptop sufficiently lacks. Now I love my computer, but like every parent, I crave for the perfect offspring. Why, you may ask. Well, first off the Satellite is not that fast and the 32 mbs of RAM isn't sufficient enough to run multiple programs at one time or even large programs like Adobe Photoshop 4.0 without slowing down to a crawl. The 4.0 gb hard drive also doesn't provide enough space for one to store large files. I often feel handcuffed with my computer, but, alas, I am satisfied. For the price, I felt I could've gotten a better deal, but in the long run it has served me well and if you don't want to be hampered with large hard drives and overwhelming speed, I suggest you choose this one. It serves its purpose (for the family-oriented computer). It's not a monster, but it does occasionally roar.
