I bought an Artec CDRW 2x2x6 in Nov of 1998. It worked fine for about 4 months then started dealing me a bunch of coasters (or next years Christmas tree ornaments). I contacted the company and sent it back to them for repairs, re-installed it, and it worked great !
However, 4 months later, it started screwing up again ! I hadn't made any system changes so, I knew the drive was bad. I contacted the company and they told me to try this and that --- which I did and in the process, ruined more media and spent more of my own $$$ to help them debug their problem. Eventually, they gave me an RMA # to return the drive and I did (again, using my own money to pay for shipping & handling). After waiting 2 weeks, the drive was returned to me without being repaired -- I'm not sure it ever got tested before being returned because it sure didn't work on my computer. Anyhow, I reinstalled it because it would still write RW media and this was how I primarily used it in backing up my files.
Well, about 2 months later, it would no longer write to RW media. I contacted the company again (3rd times a charm right ?), got an RMA # and returned the drive. This time, the drive was inspected by one of their managers and determined to be faulty. They then sent me a new drive (non-retail, bare drive in my old box) and told me the warranty would not be extended beyond the original 1 year ( about 1 month left by now ).
This bare drive in my old box now sits at the bottom of my closet. I refuse to go through any more agony with this ARTEC product which is sucking money out of my pocket by ruining media and forcing me to pay s&h every 4 months to return to the company --- which no longer was an option after the 1 yr warranty expired.
On my last return, I bought a new Iomega Zip CDRW 4x4x24 and haven't had ANY problems with it in the 9 months I've been using it. Due to my experience, I will NEVER buy another ARTEC product.
