A simple home network.

Pros:Multiple computer access
Cons:Need to upgrade firmware
Well I finally bit, and ordered a DSL Internet connection for my home.
I currently have 2 computers and constantly have to fight for phone time. My local newspaper had some excellent articles (at least I thought they were) on simple home networking.
I wanted to have some security that I can control with this type of Internet access, but did not want to spend an arm and a leg. I know there are programs out there that will help with firewall functions and work as an access point on a computer for your other computers, but at a price. They tend to take up valuable resources on your computer system. That is why I felt a ROUTER was the way to go.
I also did a little research prior to deciding on the LINKSYS BEFSR41, and found reviews pro and con about it’s ability to offer some firewall protection that is built in; the ability to run multiple computers, and not using up valuable computer resources. With that in hand, I went out and purchased a LINKSYS ETHERFAST CABLE/DSL ROUTER BEFSR41.
The instructions are simple, and pretty much made for a non-techie like me (although not being afraid of a computer is helpful and understanding to a limited extent what certain computer terms mean does help).
The ROUTER is easily accessed via a browser. The configuration seemed to be a cinch, until I went to hook it to my DSL modem. I could not make a connection. The firmware version with the unit that I purchased was 1.30. After manipulating the various features blindly, I decided to upgrade the firmware (http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp).
As soon as I did this (ver 1.36), reset the settings and restarted my computer viola! Multiple computers access via the DSL.
There were also a few new features added with the new firmware upgrade. One I really like is the ability to track what Internet sites are being accessed and by which computer. (Nice way to keep an eye on the kids when they are online)
