The HP Pavilion 8556 is definitely a couple of steps back from the cutting edge with its 450 Mhz Pentium III engine, but that's really a good thing. Why pay for the latest and greatest when its been replaced before you can get it home? I bought this unit at Costco and was dazzled by how much bang I got for my $1,350 bucks. Its fast enough for the work I do with it: downloading, manipulating and enhancing digital photos; creating a complex monthly 11" X 17" newsletter; bookkeeping; and the occasional game.
What sets this unit apart is the inclusion of the HP CDWriter Plus. This tool is a great way to make backing up something you can enjoy. It also has become a favorite way for our consulting office to communicate its latest offerings and to produce a final version of what a specific consultation's recommendations are, including graphics, photos and musical background, for our clients.
The front mounted USB and camera port make it a snap to synchronize a PDA and download digital photos. One of my favorite extras is the Internet Keyboard. It works great and has a good feel!
Software inclusions are weak with the standard MS Works package but considering everything that is included (17" HP Monitor, CDRW, 56K Modem, a network interface card and room for expansion) that's a small price to pay for what is otherwise a machine to enjoy.
