Compaq 5155 -- 18 months without a crash!
Jun 07 '00
Can you think of a better thing to say about a computer? I can't... I have been using a home computer since January 1994. I started out in the computer world with an Apple Performa 475.
You still with me? Often, computer people hear about my humble beginnings and laugh so hard that the conversation has to end there... But the point is this: as much as I loved having a computer and as easy as the Apple was to use -- it crashed, not once but many times over the years. I can remember spending numerous hours attempting to fix it... Okay, you are saying to yourself: She tried to fix it herself? You can stop laughing now... I was actually successful on ALL my attempts. I even added memory to the computer all by myself (had to open it and everything -- fully expecting smoke to come pouring out, but it never did).
When we moved 2 years ago all of our worldly belongings were in storage for a few months. I found I needed a fix! No computer for that long and I was breaking out in hives...
So off to the stores I went (we live in a rural area, "off to the stores" here is no easy task!) -- I spent days on the phone and in the car doing some investigating... A couple of people recommended I try a Compaq. See, there was no Epinions to check with back then (the old days, you know...). Finally, I went to Costco and bought a Compaq Presario 5150 with an MV700 monitor.
I was back online within the day and could feel the tension of the past months seep away as I typed! This computer has been a dream (other than when the kids change my settings which drives me buggy) with not a single crash or problem in 18 months... It has plenty of memory for me and the speed when online, although nowhere near what others have, is terrific for me. I remember when I was online with the Mac and I would attempt to load something --- I could go out and mow the lawn only to return and see I still had time to make dinner for the kids (unless of course I was thrown offline for inactivity!) before the first page was fully loaded...
The computer cost me over $1700 including the monitor and it was money well spent. Here is the information I got off the computer (you think I would know any of this otherwise?)
Processor: AMD - K6 at 350MHz
Memory: 128 Megabytes
Storage: 7.468GB
Windows 98 (okay this one I knew without looking)
Numeric Coprocessor Integrated 387 compatible
The computer has a CD which works well, except for the door which broke off a few months ago -- did I mention I have kids?
