its not too hard

Installing a new hard drive is no big deal. Here are my steps to doing this operation.

1. Will you keep your old one as a secondary, ditch it, or make this a secondary?
2. Do you have the space in your case and installation procedure.
3. What to do when it boots?
4. Have fun I guess?

1. Are you unsure if you want to have to install all your software and operating system agian? If you want to copy all your old config from the old drive to the new drive and not wrry about the other steps, there is a prgram called norton ghost. Norton Ghost copies all the files and properties from the other drive to your new drive. I would suggest setting the drive you will copy files to as your secondary (if thats your route go to step 2). Its good to install a clean OS onto your computer such as Windows 2000 or Mellenium Edition. If you do this, the operating system might detect that your drive is fast for instance the old one was only a 5400 rpm. Now you have a 7200 rpm. It might add components to enhance those properties. This was my previous route.

2. First you must check if you have a space to place our drive in and check for a open plug for the cable that connects to IDE 1 on your motherboard. If you have both of these, then you are are set to install it as a primary or secondary drive. If not you could just replace the old one with the new one. Remember to check your drive manual for jumper settings. A secondary drive is like a spare for junk files like mp3's, videos, word doc's, and such. I suggest having a faster drive as your master. Just follow manual instructions.

3. When you boot up it should detect. If you are installing a clean drive, insert a windows start-up disk or enter your bios and change boot setting to cdrom,a,c if your going to install windows nt/2000. Pop the cd in and restart with either a start-up disk or a OS cd inserted and you should be beginning your OS setup.

4. Install your jusnk or start using Norton Ghost to copy files and be a space hog.
