| surferdude7's Full Review: Logitech Camera Family |
Logitech offers 4 QuickCams, Express, VC, Web and Pro 3000. I will highlight all four a little since it is under "Logitech Camera Family" but the main one I will be writing about is the QuickCam Pro 3000. The listing is kind of misleading showing the QuickCam Web at 640 x 480 with a cost of $50.
Like all web cams for the computer, they all lack full screen and they are not as good as your movie cameras.
QuickCam Express
Retails for around $49, you can find it for $34 to $49.
16-bit color display at 320 x 240 with 30 frames per second.
Made for the PC only with a USB hookup.
QuickCam VC
Retails for around $79.
Resolution is 24-bit color and pixel image is 320 x 240 with 15 frames per second.
Works on the PC and Macintosh uses a USB hookup.
You can get the parallel one and it has 30 frames per second.
QuickCam Web
Retails for around $79, can be bought for as low as $65.
16-bit color display at 320 x 240 with 30 frames per second.
Made for the PC only with a USB hookup.
QuickCam Pro 3000
My choice is the QuickCam Pro, yes it has 640 x 480, but when you are running 1280 x 1024 it is still a small picture. Though 640 x 480 is a huge picture for a $99 Web Cam.
It is a breeze to hookup, just plug it into the USB port, Windows 98 and up will recognize the camera and then all you have to do is install the software. The software is easy to install and it is very easy to lean and use.
It is a funny looking camera, something you would see in a futuristic type movie. This camera was designed for videoconferencing. You can use it to make your web pages and to send someone a video e-mail.
Requirements
This little guy takes a potent computer to get it going.
1. Pentium II, Celeron or Athlon 300 MHz or higher. (I'm sure the AMD Duron will run it.)
2. 32 MB of RAM with 75 MB of hard drive space.
3. An AGP video card.
4. Windows 98 or better.
5. A full duplex sound card.
6. A 56k modem or faster so you can broadcast live video.
Pros
Pixels are 640 x 480 this is better than most.
You can capture still photos or movie images.
Software is easy to use, with video editing software included. There are all kinds of software made to use with the Internet.
Cons
Only 16-bit color, the human eye can see up to 24-bit. If you don't think there is a difference, switch your resolution down to 16-bit, you will see what I mean.
640 x 480 seems to run slow, it runs better in a lower resolution.
You may have to manually adjust it to get the picture quality you want.
Overall
I like the camera, it is attractive, the price is reasonable and it is easy to use.
The picture quality is fairly smooth and the color is fair. The still photos are fair also in 640 x 480.
Shop around, there are better quality picture ones out there but not for less than $100. Myself I didn't want a whole lot of money tied up in a web camera.
