surf cordless with the IBM Cordless Computer Connection

Written: Oct 02 '99
Pros:Works great, IBM quality, no software needed, EASY
Cons:Wished it was even smaller, otherwise perfect!

This really is a great device. It does exactly what it says it will, and at a reasonable price.
I bought this item thru the web for under $50.00 including shipping!. It is a black brick sized box with little cellphone antennas sticking out. Actually the brick is 2 pieces, a base that you plug the ac adapter (supplied) into and also a pair of standard telephone jacks,(one from wall, 2nd one to plug in your phone into) and a second piece that is basically a cordless phone without the talking & hearing units. It has a std phone jack to plug in your laptop's modem plug into. It also comes with a METAL clip that allows attaching to the lid of you laptop if desired.
Now comes the best part, Plug in the base unit's power and phone line in somewhere high for better range. Next take the remote unit and plug you laptop modem cord into it. Turn it on, DONE! Thats it. NO SOFTWARE needs to be installed. Nothing has to be changed. I sit on my front porch at night and surf cordless. BIG DOG on back porch (St.Bernard). I've even surfed from my next door neighbor's house. The remote unit has rechargeable batteries that recharge when you return it to the base just like a cordless phone. Battery lasts about 2 hours buts starts beeping low condition after about an hour and fifteen minutes. Not a problem really, it just chirps every 5 minutes or so to remind you. If I was going to download a large file, I would'nt do it if it was beeping. The unit supports most std modems. I've used it on both laptops (IBM-Toshiba-Compaq) and a few desktops (Compaq-Gateway-several homebuilts) without a single problem. IBM says it handles speeds above 33.6 (I have not seen any loss of speed using it) It also supports fax, voice and full-duplex speakerphone. Also compatible with KFlex and X2 modems.
Remember this is a 900Mhz cordless phone basically, but around the house it works great. Simple, Cheap, IBM quality. Look Ma no wires! Buy it, You'll love it! It's one of the neatest things I've ever bought, at any price!
