Vigilante8 has a simple concept: drive around in '70's muscle cars, and blow things up. One group of road warriors are driving around the country blowing up gas stations, oil refineries, ski resorts, etc. Another group is trying to stop them. All are heavily armed with machine guns, mortars, mines, heat seeking missles, rockets, and "special weopons" including angry bees, lightening, and a loud stereo!
Basically you must destroy your enemy, before they destroy you. And depending on which character you decide to use either blow something up, or prevent it from being blown up.
All of the environments are destructible; meaning that everything you see will explode if you shoot it enough.
The game offers a variety of ways to play: arcade mode allows you to either play head to head with another person, or against the game. In this mode you simply try to kill your enemy, and survive. You are given several choices of locations in which to battle, all of which are exciting and beautifully rendered.
Another choice is quest mode. In this mode you travel cross country, and must complete a certain task in each location. For instance, you may have to destroy a power generator, then blast your enemy to oblivion.
This game is wonderfully designed, the graphics are beautiful, and smooth. And the action is exciting.
This game offers hours of fun play, and is superior to other games of its type, such as Twisted Metal.
The only drawback is that once you have destroyed your opponent the game ends. It would be better if you could continue to destroy your environment, and search for hidden areas after you've conquered all enemies.
footnote:
I prefer the Playstation version as it is less expensive, but epinions only lists it under N64, I have played both but this review is primarily based on the Playstation.
