| Triple_Ultima's Full Review: Napster |
At first, I was skeptical about Napster. I wasn't sure I was comfortable with the fact that other users would look at the songs I have and then download them directly from me. I was anxious to try out some new artists I heard about. This left me in limbo, trying to decide whether or not to get Napster. Hearing about the numerous lawsuits against Napster, I decided to give it a try, not just because I am a rebel (ha), but because I was worried that I might not ever have a chance again.
I am very satisfied with my choice. It has been a number of weeks since I first downloaded Napster, and I have accumulated a collection of about 100 songs. Many of these are by artists I never would have even thought about twice if I didn't have the chance to listen to their complete songs completely free. Napster introduces its users to a whole other world, where you can freely express yourself and expose yourself to many new things.
All this doesn't come without a downside, unfortunately. Usually it takes several tries to download a complete song because of the fact that you are downloading from actual people, not a large network of reliable servers. Also, do you want to try out that new artist you read about in that niche magazine that you subscribe to? Well, good luck finding it on Napster. Chances are that if you've never heard of it before, and no one you know has, it will be very difficult to find. Finally, you can't chat with your friends or download songs from them unless you're on the same server. This doesn't sound too bad, but it will when you spend 45 minutes disconnecting and reconnecting trying to find that server.
If you want to take your downloaded tunes anywhere besides your computer desk, you'll have to buy a portable MP3 player. Since these are about the cost of a portable cd player and 12 cds put together, I have been reluctant in buying one. This is why Napster and similar services that offer free music haven't become as mainstream as cds, and probably won't be for quite a long time.
Napster is a great service, especially for the music lovers out there. However, it won't replace cds anytime soon, so don't throw out your cd player just yet.
