| bad_seed's Full Review: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Value Sound Card |
We just got this sound card in our new HP Pavillion pentium 4 PC. Brand new computer, just out of the box. When we set up our speakers (nice creative labs five-piece set) we began having problems.
After playing around with the setup and wiring, we learned that we could only make either the front speakers OR the rear speakers work at any given time. We moved the speakers around and tested each one individually to make sure none were broken. None were.
After spending a long time on the phone with tech support, we were told that we had a bad sound card, and that we would have to open up our brand new PC, remove the sound card, and send it back.
Okay, I realize that sometimes you get a bad product... but this was a new computer, and we had it custom-built for us, ordered online through the HP web site. I would really expect that the components they installed would be good components.
For what it's worth, the sound we were able to get out of two of our speakers was very good sound. We anxiously await the day when we can actually use our PC to watch DVD movies in surround-sound, as we had expected to be able to do when we got it. Even though the sound that we were able to get was nice, I'm disappointed that this brand-new sound card is defective, and a more than a little miffed about the inconvenience we have to go through to return it to the manufacturer. I am also a little skeptical of the quality of Sound Blaster products. Even though I feel that a working sound card will produce good sound from the speakers, I would be less inclined to purchase another Sound Blaster product in the future because of my initial experience with them.
