PARENTS, This is one game you don't have to worry about when it comes to what are your kids learning from the computer games they play. The game is non violent - no blood guts or gore, but a whole lot of strategy. It is fairly easy to play and I would recommend it to anyone above the age of 8. It is especially interesting to those who like trains, but the strategy and options can keep most entertained. I believe this is one game for the whole family.
ADULTS, This one heck of a strategy game. The games allows multiple as well as solitary play with or without computer generated players. Many options allow players to play almost any time period from the 1800's to the present and some futuristic games as well. What hapens if the ice caps melt and large sections of land as we now know it are flooded? The game is allows players to choose from almost any continent and terrain. There is also a nice editor which while not the easiest to use, does allow for the creation of imaginary lands to conquor.
The biggest problem with the game is the lack of ability to build tunnels. Railroading in the Mountains is very hard since everything has to go over rather than through them. Pick your route carefully or suffer with very slow trains.
The lessons taught are applicable to everyday life. Find the fastest, cheapest and best way to get goods and people from place to place, with the option to buy industry and trade stock and thereby make the most money. If you do this better than the other players, you win, if not you lose.
The basic module for play features a Steam Engine on the cover with an optional Expansion Pack for the Second Century which features a Diesel Engine on the cover. You must have the basic module to be able to play the Expansion Pack games. The price of the basic module is 49.99 and the Expansion Pack costs another 29.99. The basic module allows play from the beginning of railroading in the 1800's to about 1930, the Expansion Pack takes the player into the 21st Century. I recommend both. Be sure to visit the following web sites to acquire patches for these games www.godgames.com and www.poptop.com.
This game is designed for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0. Overall rating excellent.
