I just purchased this product on October 16, 2000. I purchased it from Best Buy for $49.99. My old Acer CD-ROM drive bit the dust and I was in need of buying a new one anyone that supported digital audio extraction so I could do direct copies with my CD-RW drive.
Performance
This drive is very quick at reading data once it starts up. Every time you try to read from it the drive has to spin the cd up to speed. This take a short second to do then it begins to read the CD quickly. I had a 4x before this drive so it is quite an improvement. I noticed a big increase in the loading of games and installing software.
Downfalls
The only downfall of this drive is that it is fairly noisy. The sound of the CD spinning at very high speeds is fairly loud. The sound is not very annoying at all.
Installation
Installing the drive was simple. Just make sure you set the jumper (master, slave, cable) to the original setting on your old drive and the cd rom drivers you already had installed will recognize it once again. There was no software to install. Just plug in the power wire, interface cable, and the MPC audio cable. Very simple.
Overall, for 50 bucks, this is an excellent drive.
