I was extremely excited when I brought this puppy home with me from my local store. Straight out the box, I put it right in my slightly outdated Pentium 166, and got straight down to business. The software installed with no difficulty, and windows recognized it as a CD drive right away, so even though I removed my previous CD drive installation went fine.
The only disappointing part of this item is that it comes with Adaptec easy-CD. For beginners, Easy-CD is fine: It makes audio CDs, it make data CDs, and it'll even generate very nice covers and liner notes all for you. And it definetly gets points for ease of use. With directCD, a subsection of Easy-CD, you can just drag items onto your CDR, and burn them right then from explorer. Not to mention automatic conversion of MP3s to WAVs when you make audio CDs. But as for complex burning operations, it really lacks: No VCDs, or any hybrid CD at all, I don't think (So no mac CDs, no audio and data cds).
But the software has been the only downside to my recent purchase. 8x burning means a cd in something like 12 minutes. 4x re-writing for CDRWs means a complete re-write in like 24 minutes, which is a little while, but just about as good as it gets. I, unfortunately, am unable to burn at 8x on my computer, but that's simply because my P166 just can't handle it. 6x burning works perfectly, though.
Some CDRs are picky about media, but I've been using dirt-cheap CDRs, and the burner has no problems making it happen. I found it to be much more reliable than the HP models that I've used, and faster as well. The buffer, which prevents corrupted CDs, is even large at 6x. I have yet to have a bad burn at 6x.
All around, a favorite part of my machine.
