| muy's Full Review: Philips PC External CD-RW Kit |
I received this cd-rw as a gift a while ago, after the gift-giver saw all good reviews on it.
For the first few months, the cd-rw was hassle free, although there were some annoying things about the rewriter:
-- software was a pain. Because it's an external device, the Adaptec logo starts up whenever you log onto your computer to see if the device is connected. This slows down the already slow process of getting into windows, and unless the device is on before turning the computer on, the rewriter isn't usable (i.e., you'll have to reboot to use it)
-- making music cds was not easy. Sometimes the software crashed. Sometimes it worked but the quality of the cd copying was not good. This is a function of the software included with the machine, rather than the drive itself, though.
Later, however, a more serious problem appeared. When I tried to transfer the drive to a new computer, the drive lit up with all the error lights. The drive's light stayed on even when the machine was turned off. For some reason I couldn't open the drive anymore, and the error lights stayed on even when I disconnected the power cord!
This was disconcerting since I had backed up my old computer onto cd-rw discs. (Thank God I did a double back up onto Zip disks too). I emailed Philips for support, but have not received a reply since, even though I marked it as urgent and that was over a week ago. Philips also has no support for my particular drive model on its site, so I am in limbo now or will have to take it to a service center.
In sum, this cd-rw has caused me problems, though other people seem to love the drive. Before buying it, just consider how much tech support you'd feel safe having...
