Well folks, the $65 price tag lured me into buying this puppy. And for the first 25 or so scans, it did a great job. Then the scanning light bulb died. It looked like one of those old, dim fluorescent tubes in some sleazy bar that hangs in the hallway on the way to the john. I called customer support (ha!) and they told me to reinstall the software. Okey dokey. Nothing. So rather than wait on the phone and listen to Guy Lombardo, I've emailed them to see how one goes about getting a new bulb. Other than that, hey, you can't beat the price. Maybe for a couple of dollars more I should have bought a REAL machine. Bottom line, kids, don't waste your hard-earned dough on this gem.
*** An update *** I finally received a reply to my email from UMAX. They asked ME to call THEM (no toll-free number provided) at MY expense. I reluctantly did so. The technician assured me the bulb should last 11,000 hours and my power supply probably was defective. He told me to have it checked. I did, and it's fine. So I called back (again, my expense) and was told to fax my receipt, serial number, etc., and they would advise me how to ship the scanner back for a replacement since it's covered under a one year warranty. We shall see.
*** The continuing saga *** I shipped the scanner back to Umax and for two weeks, I heard nothing. I visited their web site and entered my "case number" which was returned with a "not found" message. So I entered the RMA number in the "track your RMA" section - again, no response. So I emailed tech support with my tale of woe. The next day when I entered my RMA number, I received a reply that the scanner had been repaired and was shipped to me a week ago. Perhaps it will be waiting for me when I get home today. Stay tuned.
