This is a decent webcam to start out with. It's not too expensive, although there are cheaper products out there. We did have a little trouble getting it installed and recognized but I was assured that this is not normally the case. Many others have had little or no trouble plugging it in and having Windows recognize it. Despite the trouble in the beginning I still think it was worth it.
We chose this one over the other basically on the features it has compared to the other ones. Yes you can get cheaper but I have heard from countless others that those cheaper ones are just that, cheap. So we decided on this one, finally got it installed and we were up and running.
You can use it for video conferencing, taking still pictures and making videos. It gives a 15 frame rate, which is fine by me, I wasn't looking for perfection, plus I'm only using a 56k connection. I've taken many still pictures with it already and although the coloring and lighting could be better, it works pretty well. I use software to touch-up the pictures when I'm not happy with them. I've taken quite a few short video's with it too. Only problem with that is sometimes the person I send the video to can't see it if I use the video compression feature.
The colors and lighting are not the greatest with this, but then again I wasn't looking for perfection and they don't boast to have the best. The best way with lighting is to have a light above your monitor in front of the subject, any other way seems to not have enough lighting for the picture.
Works great for taking snapshots of one of the kids to send to friends and family. Good for home use. All in all it's a good product for the price.
