Did I mention that I hate it?
I prefer Internet Explorer for my browsing, but I began using Netscape more after all of the problems with viruses in Outlook. I was using version 4.7 which though I found it cumbersome, I was satisfied, but not thrilled. Which gave me a great bit of anticipation for the much-touted version 6.
After a few problems trying to download it, I finally managed to get it to come up and work. I was disappointed that there is no icon on the taskbar, and no separate icon for Netscape Messenger, Navigator, & Composer.
When you bring up "Netscape 6" you are brought into whatever default opening program you indicated in your preferences. For example, if your default program is Navigator, that is what comes up. To get into Messenger, you have to bring up Navigator first, then click on one of the icons to go into Messenger.
The program itself seems to run slower than a normal browser. I don't like the sidebar in Navigator, since it cuts way into your viewing area, but it can be easily shrunk. Most of the information seems unnecessary on a continual basis. The toolbar at the top is pre-loaded with all Netscape sites such as webmail, download & calendar.
They are also pushing Net 2 Phone on you with this download as well as AOL Instant Messenger.
I'll stick with 4.7 and Internet Explorer, thank you very much.
Update:
A few months ago, I was having trouble with my Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Netscape 6.0 was working fine. I went for a month using it, and finally decided that if I had to, I would rather wipe my entire hard drive and start from scratch rather than continue using Navigator.
The reason is the clunkiness and slowness - even in version 6.2. Internet Explorer - for all its faults - is a much faster browser than Navigator. Every day I would end up more and more aggravated and frustrated as it took me longer to do my usual daily tasks. It would also freeze up at times, and I would lose the page I had been working on.
Certain webpages are not compatible with the browser, either. I can argue that the webmaster is at fault for not creating a page that is compatible with both browsers, but it doesn't help when they just don't do that.
I finally managed to get Explorer working again. Though Navigator is still on the computer in case of an emergency, I'd rather use Explorer any day of the week.
