Shoddy Quality -- Pass On Philips

Written: Mar 02 '00 (Updated Mar 02 '00)
Pros:Burns Quickly and Effectively (when working)
Cons:Shoddy Quality (I've had two break myself)

Generally speaking, I have found that Philips makes quality products. I cannot, unfortunately, extend that praise to their CD-RW drives.

I am personally on my second Philips CD-RW drive right now. The first died after only about 6 months of light use. I immediately contacted Philips support who, after much deliberation, sent me a new drive. I am now having problems with this one as well.

I thought that perhaps this might be an isolated case. I turned to the internet to search for any information on the drives. I have found that there are others, and plenty of them. For a quick peek, check out the web site below, it's dedicated to two Philips drives, both of which have had their fair share of trouble:

The poor construction quality makes these drives hit or miss; a risk not worth taking. Especially with so many other options available.
I will say that when my drive is operational, it works like a charm. However, that is hardly consolation for anyone who turns 8 blank CDs into useless coasters.

My advice is to look elsewhere. Ricoh and Yamaha both seem to have good reputations.
Whatever your decision, make sure to research it a bit before purchasing. After all...better safe than sorry!
