| catfood's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS T700r |
I've had my 700r for a couple weeks now and have found it reliable and easy to use.
In the past, I've had trouble with reliability with Dell machines and stopped ordering from Dell on a commercial basis because of incredibly poor support. I went from ordering $20,000 in machines a month from Dell to $0, largely because they kept me on hold for over 2 1/2 hours because some repeated screwups on fulfilling a hard drive replacement for my wife's laptop. They didn't send the BIOS updater and that caused permanent damage to the new hard drive.
But it appears Dell has gotten their act together, not only with the technical and customer support (both of which I used over the phone with no wait!) but with the machine itself. They've moved away from changing the components every day to perhaps every two weeks or so. Prices have remained QUITE consistent.
Support after the sale has been quite good, and I'm please that all the CDs for the materials I ordered were shipped in one box. And we got a free printer as well.
Dell did an incredibly quick turnaround on this machine, completing it 4 days after the order was placed (ordered on a Saturday no less!)
Dell, however, has to either stop using UPS or offer alternative shipping services (ever hear of the US Postal Service) UPS policies for dropping off packages are ridiculous, unsafe, and incredibly inconvenient. Dell also needs to display estimated shipping costs BEFORE the transaction is completed. $105 to ship the machine, speakers, and a printer (no monitor) on the cheapest manner available is, in my mind, excessive.
Dell had the best options for what I wanted (but couldn't get a SCSI card controller built in), didn't stick me with unnecessary stuff I couldn't get rid of (except for a modem, but that's always good to have for faxing stuff). I wish AMD-Athlon motherboards were more reliable; I would have liked to go that direction, but I'll feed the Pentium monster for now...
