| Rocketgirl's Full Review: Corel WordPerfect 8 |
I have been using WordPerfect since version 4.2 for DOS. I LOVE the program. Our company was recently forced to go to Microsoft Word because of some clause in our government contract that said we had to "buy American" (I guess Canada isn't American?). But you know we had to put all that on hold because of all the conversion problems, so we are right back to using WordPerfect 8. It is a welcome friend.
WordPerfect's strong point has always been "reveal codes." If something is not working right you can always view the codes, diagnose the problem yourself, and fix it. In Word, all you can do is recode it. The program is flexible enough to handle everything from a simple business letter to a multiple column newsletter. Tabs, margins, fonts, tables, everything is a breeze. Throughout all its versions, WordPerfect has always kept its terminology consistent and located its tools and helpers in logical places, grouped in logical ways. It has no problem importing graphics, though importing from some graphics file types such as .PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint) may take an additional conversion. WordPerfect 8 has no difficulty saving to other file types or converting other file types. It has a "HTML" converter to build web pages.
Though this program might take a novice some time to learn, it is not because the program is difficult. It is just because there is so MUCH to learn, and so MUCH WordPerfect can do for you. You'll also want to learn the various shortcuts and techniques, such as using the right-button click to speed up tasks. I use the right-button as extensively as possible, since I really prefer to keep my fingers on the keyboard, rather than use a mouse. For those of you that are keyboard oriented, WordPerfect has various keyboard shortcuts to speed up.
If you buy this product, I would recommend purchasing WordPerfect 8 with the Corel "suite", which contains WordPerfect Presentations (graphics software), Quattro Pro (spreadsheet), CorelCentral (day planner), and other tools. With careful shopping, you can get the complete Suite 8 for close to the price you would pay for WordPerfect alone.
