I'm sure your probably wondering why I named my review "A nice community", where firetalk is a program. I hope I can fully answer that by the time I'm done with my review.
I have tried a lot of "talking" programs. So many in fact I have forgotten the names. But I keep trying them because I hoped eventually I would really like one. I was right.
Firetalk doesn't take long to download and install, all depending on your connection to the internet, I believe the longest time would be about 20 minutes start to finish. The program assists you in the process and is fairly easy to understand and follow.
The whole concept is, it allows you to "talk" to other people. Which if you're not a fairly decent typist, these new talk programs are really a relief. Now the people that you speak with have to have this program as well. You can either create your own room, with a unique name and invite your friends, or you can join in rooms already established and talk to the people in the rooms. You also have an option of "locking" your room with a password. I would imagine you would use this feature if just you and your family were talking and didn't want people you don't know coming into your room. Also, you can use text chat, this comes in real handy because sometimes you fade in and out in the chat. I believe this has a lot to do with how much traffic is on the net. I personally found, the later the better, the better the connection and the clearer. But even at peak times you can really hear pretty well, and most people can hear you.
The reason I call it a community, is because a lot of the rooms have people in them all the time. One such room is the PC tech chat room. I have gone there on numerous occasions to ask questions about a computer problem, or a program I couldn't figure out, and you know what, every single time my question was answered, and my problem was resolved. They talked me right through the problem. I have actually saved money by not having to call the manufacturer of my computer (they have tech support but it costs for the phone call) and I don't have to wait on hold!
Talking to people on the internet is kind of like having a CB radio. You have a call name that you go by, sometimes you get real good reception, and sometimes you break up a bit. But unlike the CB you do have the option to type as well.
I have had firetalk for over a year, and I've had 2 computers in that time frame. I haven't had any major problems with the program that are really bad. I have had bad connections, but I've had more good connections than bad. I've been in rooms with offensive people, but that happens anywhere. You can put the person on ignore, but what I have found is that most rooms have a moderator, and they usually ban the person from the room. A moderator is the person who started the room and this person usually keeps the "chat" going, or in the case of PC tech, they are usually the most knowledgeable about the subject. Also all rooms have a name, so from the name you pretty much know what to expect, i.e., "pregnant woman in their 20's","senior chat", so it makes it easier to sift through the rooms until either you find something that interests you, or you start your own room.
I have found a lot of chat rooms on various issues, some rooms are fun, some serious. Just like anything else, the more you go there, the more familiar you are with various people, and you know who you like and what you like to listen to and talk about.
This program is free, it has a few drawbacks, but, really now, where can you talk to people all over the world with just a click of a mouse. Think about it, how wonderful and enlightening that is.
