Gnutella Rules, Napster is toast

Written: Apr 19 '00
Pros:mediocre UI
Cons:Revolutionary MP3 and MPEG search program

While Napster broke new ground, Gnutella is what is going to change the world. Gnutella (http:///gnutella.wego.com) is the new software that was accidentally leaked by Nullsoft, creators of WinAmp. But now WinAmp is owned by AOL/Time Warner, so it suddenly isn't cool when they release the single most potent MP3 search engine of all time.

Gnutella is an MP3--and any other file you might be looking for--search engine that doesn't require a web site or a server network, so they can't shut you down. It works only peer to peer. It's like a game of telephone. My computer has Gnutella, it looks up another computer and asks it, "can you give me the IP list of all the computers you have talked to with Gnutella." The program then goes to every one of those ip addresses and asks the same thing.

There is no central server, only an endless game of telephone, where Gnutella racks up lists of MP3s, MPEGs, AVIs, and even entire applications.

If you want your own copy of photoshop, search for that. However it might be illegal to download.

Gnutella is going to change the face of the copyright world and digital file transfer
