Getting a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) was always something that I thought would be cool. I would drop hints to my wife, saying that one would make a great birthday or Christmas present, but I was always thwarted. “You don’t even use your planner,” she’d say. Which is only slightly true. I do use my Franklin Covey planner, but not like she does. Hers is literally her life, every detail, every bit of minutia. Mine is more like a very expensive Post-It note. So you can see her reluctance in getting me a PDA.
My bosses, however, have circumvented her reasonable arguments. Recently the entire staff at my office were rewarded with Palm IIIes. I’m not very long into my ownership of a Palm, but I’ve already got many good things to say about it.
Firstly, the people at 3Com have been very busy with improvements. The Graffiti data entry software analyzes your handwriting much better than previous versions. Advanced symbols and punctuation are now available. It is also very forgiving of loose writing strokes. If you’re too loose, I suggest getting one of the many programs that enables you to teach Graffiti to accept different versions of the same letter. Of course you don’t have to use Graffiti. The keyboard and number pads allow you to pick single letters with ease.
The best feature for me is the Palm Desktop software, which enables you to enter data using your PC and to interface with other information management software packages like Outlook. The interface is very intuitive and runs very similarly to its corresponding parts on the Palm. You can make entries into the Date Book, Memo Pad, Address Book, and To Do List. Sending information back and forth between the desk top and the Palm are literally push-button easy. Simply press the Hot Sync button on the Palm’s cradle and the PC and Palm exchange information.
Admittedly, things haven’t been all productivity and efficiency for me. I have also downloaded several games that I use pass the time on the bus ride to work. Demon Solitaire, Traffic, and Squaretris are my favorites.
The 2 megs of RAM that come with PalmIIIe is so far more than enough. The product literature says that it will hold thousands of addresses and phone numbers with the standard memory. I just hope that I don’t crazy and download too many games, uh, I mean applications.
The PalmIIIe is definitely a quality product with many great features. It is adaptable to your preferences and very versatile. The two AAA battery power source is also quite cheap and convenient.
Well, I’ve got to go now. I’ve got more stuff that I need to copy into my Palm from my wife’s planner.
