2 years old and ready for school?!?

Written: Aug 12 '00
Pros:great variety of games, two different levels of playing, age appropriate learning is fun
Cons:some sounds are annoying, some activities need constant parental help

I'm currently staying at my aunt/uncle/cousin's house, and I've spent quite a few days taking care of their daughter, who is 2. Let me say that she is quite a handful to say the least. However, when I ask her if she wants to play the Ready For School computer game, her eyes light up with happiness!

Once the cd-rom is inserted, you have to choose level one or level two..depending on your child's age. I figure level one is for kids 1 1/2-3, and level two is for kids aged 3-4. I've only really played with the level one games, but I have taken a peek at the older levels too.

The main screen features the Little People characters, each having a different game. There are 12 games per level..each containing a game filled with fun and learning. Who knew the concept could go so well together? Fisher Price of course! Some of the activities include learning numbers, your ABC's, learning sounds and names of animals, how to use the telephone, who some important people like the police are, and shapes. The computer is a great and fun way to introduce your kids to these things.

My cousin's favorite game is the ABC's one..which has you press any key or click the mouse and a new letter will appear, (in alphabetical order). After Z, they will all come again - this time to music, without any prompting from you. It's a good way to introduce kids to the alphabet, where after each letter you can say it's name, and have the child repeat the name of the letter. Another game involves what is probably hand/eye coordination..where you have to click on an object as a Little Person character moves toward it.

The only disadvantages to this game is that some of the sounds are pretty annoying, and sometimes come across very loud, while the next sound may be extremely soft. Also, most of these games require constant adult help (in level 1), which is not always as easy as you may think.. (trust me, I have learned quickly.)

This is a really great game for parents with young children who want to introduce them to the computer in a fun, colorful way. Kids can learn and enjoy themselves at the same time, which is wonderful.
