| jeffrottman's Full Review: AlphaSmart 3000 |
As a radio journalist, over the years I've used a lot of so called "portable" computers which were geared toward word processing, but was always disappointed that the machines just were either too heavy, cumbersome and always a pain to connect to a computer to upload the word processing files. Starting in the late 80's I've tried an Epson HX20, an Epson Geneva PX-8, a Radio Shack Model 100 and even a Tandy WP-2.
Recently with the help of the Internet I have been searching for something lighter and simpler and found both in my brand new Alphasmart 3000. This thing is great! Before buying the Alphasmart I considered units from Calcuscribe, Perfect Solutions, and Dreamwriter, but settled on the Alphasmart because of their current trade-in offer and its all around ruggedness and size.
When it arrived the other day I did have trouble hooking it up through the USB port on my IBM Aptiva, It just didn't seem to find the right file on my computer or Win 98 CD. So I just hooked it up through my PS-2 Keyboard port and it works like a charm on my 300 Mhz machine.
I bought an extra Y-cable for my work computer, which is a slow 66 mhz Acer. The only problem with that, is when I transfer a file, even at the slowest setting, the keyboard sends it too fast for my regular word processor. I guess I need to learn to divide up my stories into separate file areas and send one, then pause and send another file area.
I couldn't be happier with the AS 3000 though, it just fits the bill for me. Maybe I can write a lot more Epinion reviews too, while I sit at home watching TV!
