Yet another way to prevent spam
Jun 16 '00
Pam's opinion on how to prevent spam was great (http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-2D94-83CDAB8-393FFB47-prod4). There are a TON of great ideas in that message. However, you still may get spam even if you don't sign up for anything on the web. You may have the alternate e-mail to sign up for websites, or you just stay away from companies that might send them mass messages. But even you, the cautious websurfer, may still get spam. Why? It's your friends.
If you have friends that LOVE to send those mass messages (you know them; the jokes, the family messages, the company newsletters, the chain letters), either ask them to exclude you from those lists, or ask them to mass-message you via the Bcc: (Blind Carbon Copy) function. This will effectively "hide" you from everyone else that the e-mail was sent to.
If you've noticed whenever you receive forwards that there are a lot of e-mail addresses near the top, then you know what I'm talking about.
In the end, there's going to be SOME person collecting those e-mails and putting you on a list that eventually gets its way to every marketer on this planet.
So protect yourself. But remember, these are friends/family/acquaintences. Be delicate :)
