eBay is an excellent place to buy MANY items! (I believe that it is also a great place to sell, but I have not done so so I will not comment).
The site is set up very well, and it is easily navigated. One can look for desired items by searching (using boolean operators, if desired) or by following to links to more and more specific categories.
When one finds an item that they wish to have, he or she may place a bid for this item. Generally one enters the highest amount of money that they would pay for the item, but the actual bid is only high enough to beat the current high bidder. This is an excellent system as it allows users to bid just once on each item. That is, users need not check the site every 5 minutes to determine the current high bid. Also, eBay emails users to notify them if they have been outbid. This gives users the opportunity to re-bid, if desired.
The breadth of items that can be bought on eBay is enormous. antiques.....makeup......clothing......electronics.......cars......etc....etc.....etc. However, make sure that an item is labeled "brand new" if this is important (as in makeup and clothing usually).
Another great feature of eBay is "feedback." After any transaction, each of the two users posts a short message about the other user and rates the user as being positive, negative, and neutral. When bidding, one can check the seller's feedback list to insure that he or she is trustworthy. This is an IMPERATIVE step.
Overall, eBay is an excellent way to buy many items, at lower-than-store prices (ex. Abercrombie attire), or more expensively (ex. antiques). In my experience it has always been safe, but there is a risk, so be careful.
