I was very suprised to see the number of bad reviews Network Solutions has received. myself, I have a domain registered with them( http://www.quattorequii.com ) and have had no problems with them whatsoever. From my friends, many of which have domains with them, I have also heard only the best. Signing up, for me, was easy, and the price( aprox. $35 a year) reasonable. Although with the bare-end package I got no editor was provided (I had my own so didn't look into it), I rather like Network Solutions, and do not plan on using any other company when it comes time to renew my registration.
As far as the details of use, I found signup as easy as Hotmail or Angelfire, a very simple web-mail form(credit-card needed), no required extra windows. It was all a little dry, but thats expected from a buisness site. Since, I've not had any problems relating, and so no reason to contact them further, and although i do little work with the server-side of things, i've heard no problems from my sys admin.
