Pros:Free long distance, minimum hardware/software requirements, pretty good quality
Cons:occasional breakups and lag times, not compatible with the latest version of IE
Recently there has been a great deal of hype about the latest in internet telephony, DialPad.com.
I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this site at first. I mean really ...long distance calls, for free??? There had to be some catch! However, after having used it a few times, DialPad has proven itself to me and other members of my family, as we have used it as a means to stay in touch across the miles, and have been quite satisfied!
I think this is a wonderful technology, since all you really need is a computer connected to the internet, headphones and a microphone to take advantage of this service. For the best quality, having a modem with a speed of 28.8kpbs or higher is highly recommended, as well as a good processor.
The quality is pretty close to what it would be if you were using the telephone, with the exception of occasional breaking up and some lag time. But, when you think of the money you're saving in long distance fees, I think the inconvenience of having to repeat yourself once or twice is well worth it.
I have my doubts as to whether or not this service will remain to be offered for free and also the impact of future regulations for unfair competition against the phone companies, but until then I say take advantage of it!
