Take the Phone Off The Hook And Turn Out The Lights
Jun 26 '00
I have found that beginners at least the ones that I know, do not believe in looking at the help files that are so readily available. Had I known this with a couple of the people that asked me for advice on what computer to get, I would have told them to get one from the Goodwill or a place like that.
The Goodwill gets computers and monitors in everyday from people that are replacing the old ones and they want to get that little slip to turn in for taxes at the end of the year. They can use that as anything else that they donate for a tax deduction.
You can get monitors and printers there too. Although I would want to make sure that you could take it back if it did not work. Sometimes you can and sometimes you cant. I know someone that got one there and it worked real good but it got real hot real fast and I think it finally burnt up. It was clearly a danger.
Everything I have learned, I have learned by crashing my computer at least once. This is I suppose a good way to learn something if it teaches you a lesson. Any lesson learned is a valuable lesson.
I traded my old computer, one that had served me well , to a friend. I had purchased a external faster modem for it and that went with the deal. She wanted a computer and I needed furniture for my family room. So we traded. She got home plugged it all in and then called me frantic. It was not working. What could she do. Well it was working the last time that it was plugged in. Let me see. Did you push the start button. What start button was the reply. The round start button on the front of the computer. No she had not tried that yet. She was probably pushing the cd door in and out. So as soon as she pushed the start button it worked.
More advice and this I wish someone would have given me. Once you tell the friend or neighbor what computer to get, take your phone off the hook for at least the first week. Turn all the lights off in the house so that they cant see that you are up
I have found that it does not do a bit of good to tell people not to let the kids mess with the computers. They get mysteriously messed with at least once. My sisters computer got mysteriously set to settings that a person with severe eye problems would be able to see the icons and the writing. It was as big as you could make it. The background was pitch black. It took me forever to figure that problem out and was real hard for me to work on. They were use to it and thought that it just set itself that way. Black background with flourescent pink or hot pink writing.
Second train of thought. With people that are going to want a computer that they are going to want to go on the Internet with. I don’t feel that a computer from the goodwill is going to fit those needs. So those people I tell to go and get the best deal that they can on a computer . Make sure it has plenty of memory and a fast modem so that you do not have to replace it in a year.
If you are going to get a computer for a beginner, encourage them to read the help files. You would be amazed at what answers you can find there.
And don’t forget to take your phone off the hook and turn the lights out.
