There are (in my opinion) three factors that should be looked at when deciding which 'firewall' to install on your computer.
1) Easy of installation. Hey, I don't care if the software (or hardware)is as secure as Fort Knox, if it's a bear to set up, forget it. Depending on what you have to 'tell the software' at some point you will either remove it, or disable it; effectively opening up your system to the bad guys. Black Ice is a simple 'install' and your up and going, it just doesn't get any easier.
2) Price. I want as much protection as I can get, but I'd rather not take out a second mortgage to buy it. There are software packages out there ranging from $40.00 to $100.00; the hardware starts at $100.00 and goes up. Black Ice defender (which is the package for home users) is $39.95
3) What operating systems does it work on/with. My server is running Windows 2000, at the present time there are very few firewall packages for this new operating system. Black Ice works with Win95, Win98, Win NT, Win 2000. Unfortunately Norton does not work with Windows 2000.
So, how does it operate? Like a charm. It stops probes, it stops unwelcome hackers, it stops incoming threats and it tells you exactly what it did, what was trying to come in and who was sending it. This is the least expensive, easiest to set up, most secure piece of software you can buy.
You can upgrade with any and all upgrades available for a year. The only downfall is you do have to renew your license yearly to keep getting the support and the upgrades. At $40.00 per year its very cheap insurance.
