| earlgray's Full Review: IBM Aptiva E |
I recently purchased an Aptiva E Series and am very pleased with it so far. It is a Celeron 566 Mhz with 128 MB Ram, a 10 GB hard drive, and a standard CD ROM drive. Preloaded with Windows 98 and bundled with a 17" monitor and a Lexmark printer, it cost $1007.
I purchased the product because of the competitive price. It does not come extensively preloaded with software like Aptivas of the past. Instead, you get the introductory versions of a few home products like Quicken 2000, MS Works 2000, etc that you can install and decide to purchase if you want them. This means you don't have to pay for software you don't want.
After about 3 months of use at home, I've found it to be a good basic computer that performs well. The standard video and sound cards are easily good enough for standard home use, but may not be adequate for demanding games. The standard speakers look and sound cheap.
The keyboard has that firm IBM feelwhich is far better than many of it's competitors.
Some negatives are that you can't specify upgrades for many of the components like you can with other manufacturers, such as Dell. So, if you want a different video card or disk drive, you may not be able to get it. The advantage to this is that it does keep the final price down. You are less likely to end up with $1000 of extra options added to the base machine.
A new computer user may find the task of installing the basic software a bit daunting. While it does provide some support for new users, there is still a good deal of setup required to obtain a fully-functional system.
Overall, I've found this to be a good machine for the money and I recommend it to someone who wants a basic computer for standard home use.
