OK, now if you know a lot about operating systems, you may want to skip this, because it will not benefit you at all. This is entirely for the average home user who was sucked into Microsoft's tricky advertising of Win2K.
First of all, let me say that Win2K is NOT an upgrade to Win98. Windows Millenium (WinME) is the upgrade to Windows 98. Win2K is an upgrade for Windows NT, which is for networking.
What are the differences, you may ask? Well let me tell you, citizen. First of all, Win2K is an extremely secure Operating System (OS)...the most secure OS Microsoft markets. If you are looking for security on your computer, then Win2K is the OS for you. Don't believe the password box when you log into Win95/98/ME...that is just so you can set different user settings on the system for each person that uses it. That way if you want a different picture on your desktop than your wife (or whoever) does, you can set it. But in Win2K you can actually set access to different parts of the computer for different people.
Another main difference is that Win2K does not have much multimedia support. The i.Link (Firewire, IEEE1394, whatever you want to call it) is not supported in Win2K at this time, although this is being worked on. What does this mean? Basically if you want to do video editing or anything like that you don't want Win2K.
BUT, if you are on a Network, or if you are going to run a Network Server, then this is definitely the OS for you. The security is really tight on it, so it is extremely difficult (impossible? nah...) for anyone to access your information.
OK, now that all of that is out of the way, I will explain why I went into all of that. In the Sony computers, the K at the end of the model number means that it comes with Win2K, and that is the only OS that Sony will support on that system. So don't buy a normal model and try to install Win2K, because no one can guarantee you will find drivers. And don't buy a K model and put Win98 or ME on it, because there won't be drivers for that, either.
Other than these little issues, the F590 is a sweet little setup. The F series notebooks are the All In One notebooks, so there are no external devices needed. You just unplug from the power supply and walk away, and you have your entire system with you. This model just happens to be the top of the line for the F500 series notebooks, so it is more expensive than the others, but it is faster and has more memory and everything, so it is well worth it.
