| zazen1's Full Review: Zone Alarm |
Stan my computer literate friend did not beat around the bush;
" Man you could have been infiltrated , someone may have implanted a Trojan horse on your PC and they could be doing anything with it, credit fraud, espionage, major hacking, anything !"
"Sure Stan don’t you think you’re being a little melodramatic here ?" I quipped .
" No, no, not at all this is serious !"
Stan was on a rare visit and I had wanted some advice on the strange behavior of my p.c. I had asked the wrong person in some ways because he was obsessed with internet security and believed people were tracking his every move on the internet!
Stans Solution ?
Stan suggested downloading zone alarm immediately which I did .
It was a quick download and an easy install. My disappointment was no pings. I had been told by several people " you wait 'till you download zone alarm ping...ping..ping " the alerts being possible attempts by hackers to infiltrate and do various mischievous acts to your computer. Stan told me this story :
"I left my PC running and went out for a few minutes , coming back I checked my email and a hacker had left me a very gross porno picture on my email program just to let me know he’d hacked me , after that I decided to get a firewall and zone alarm is free and as good as any."
For several days now I have been running zone alarm hoping someone will attempt a hacking job on my ports , not one taker to date, I am really looking forward to collaring one of these interlopers and getting hold of their server number and report this intended abuse.
Stan assures me this will happen, just as he assured me that a virus will descend on me my system at some point(on his advice I loaded an anti- virus program).
Zone alarm is an easy to install and operate program which is free to non commercial users , there is a great deal of easy to understand and implement information on their web site. The program also has a prompt to stop it loading on start up( which I prefer) The web help line is responsive. and useful I am impressed with the back up and updates supplied. I run it on automatic lock.. There is a short annoying period where zone alarm requests the operator to permit programs to operate , this is brief as long as you tick the boxes.
At the detection of an intrusion auto lock will shut connection down and if you are curious enough you can go hunting intruders with the more information button. There is however a note posted on the web site:
Bear in mind that most of the unauthorized traffic blocked by ZoneAlarm or any other firewall has nothing to do with hackers. For example, load balancing software may cause return pings to be sent to the wrong target, IP renewals by ISPs using DHCP may flood your system with traffic generated by the previous user of that IP address, or your software may have auto-registration or auto-update features that you were unaware of or forgot to turn off.
