When Myst first came out, it was a groundbreaking game. Its concept of physical and mechanical puzzles embedded in the lavish--for that time--environment presented on the screen took adventure/mystery/puzzle games to a new dimension.
When I first started the game, I wandered around for some time before I could figure out what to do next. I could see several places that I would go to later, information that I would need later, or even sooner for that matter, but I didn't know how to trigger whatever I needed to trigger. (I'm being deliberately vague here so that those lucky few who have yet to discover Myst can come to it fresh.) In any case, I definitely got nowhere fast. Eventually, though, I started to figure it out. The game has its own internal logic, and once you've worked out one of its mysteries, knowing the kind of thinking that you used will help you solve the others.
Pay close attention, touch every switch, try every knob, write down all numbers and such things that you encounter, pay attention to all the sounds that you hear, and definitely save the game periodically.
The puzzles are of a different nature than in Riven (see my epinion of Riven, if you would like), somewhat more physical or mechanical in type, and they took me longer to solve than those in Riven. But they are just as fun, or perhaps even more so. And I did make it through the game: it was frustrating sometimes, but well worth it. My son played some of this game with me, but found it too tough. Many puzzlers may also find some the game too difficult as well, and I gather that the makers of Myst have come out with a version of the game that has some kind of help-guide embedded in it.
This is a slow game: you think, you try, you move, you try something else, you give up, you come back, you try something else... I'm sure that you get the picture. If you want a fast-twitch game, Myst will not be for you. But if you like solving puzzles and mysteries, this game is the best. Do it first and then do Riven.
