Mplayer.com must be my favorite thing to do online when I have free time. I mainly play QuakeII and now QuakeIII there, but they have a very HUGE selection of different games.
It's a totally free service, but some of the games you have to buy the retail game before you can play it (like QuakeII/III). They also have a lot of their own games that are free and you don't have to buy a game like: Poker, Backgammon, Spades, Hearts, Checkers, Chess and many more.
The service is generally very reliable, but they do have the occasional problem. That's to be expected though, I don't know how many members they have, but I'm sure it's in the millions.
Their softare is very good and reliable and the whole system is very easy to use. It automatically updates your system if needed to play a certain game which means you don't have to figure out how to find, download and install any patches or games to play.
As far as I know the only other gaming site that even comes close to Mplayer is Heat.net. Recently Mplayer did some upgrades and their service was down for a whole day! I thought I'd die if I didn't get in a few games of QuakeII, so I went and signed up for Heat.net and it was horrible. Luckily by the time I didn't think I could stand another minute of Heat.net, Mplayer's site came back up :)
