| DharmaJairam's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 5000 R600LG |
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 5000. I had been in the market for for a laptop about a year and a half and have researched the topic quite thoroughly. At first I did not want a Dell because everyone else was buying one. Then I started to look around. The laptops at the computer stores may appear cheaper but when you add the extra money for the 3 yr. warranty, the prices are similar, only if you did that you would have purchased a far inferior product.
Let me explain. One of the Computers I was looking at was the Compaq 1400Xl with, Celeron , the TV out and 13 HPA display for $1500. When you add the additional money that Circuit city wanted for the 3 yrs of extra warranty the laptop jumped to $1900. For $200 more I can have a Dell with a 15" active matrix, P III, and not have to pay more for the dumb warranty!
Reasons why I chose the Dell 5000:
1. The 3 yr. onsite warranty sold me (especially from a great company like Dell). Other notebooks that you buy in stores only have 1 yr warranties and require you to pay 25 dollars for a tech service call. That is just bull*#@*. Obviously they don't stand by their product.
2. I wanted additional features like a modular bay, Lithium battery, TV-out, port, and a great big screen. You can not get the things I wanted from other companies for cheaper.
3. I decided that although the DEll looks more expensive on the outset, it was all worth it in the long run.
My opinions:
This is a great notebook! I purchased the PIII with 96mgs ram, 8mg's of video RAM, and the 15" S-XGA screen. I highly recommend the SXGA screen over the standard 15 XGA. The resolution is amazing and you can TOTALLY notice the difference between mine and regular active matrix screens. Everything is very crisp. It also did NOT have any blown pixels either, which I heard is a problem with IBM's and Compaqs.
The fit and finish of this machine is great. Dell really seems to build it right. Nothing seems cheap about the computer.
I ordered it with 32 mg's of RAM and then purchased 64 more from Crucial. It's cheaper that way. Plus it's a breeze to install.
If you are looking for a laptop with a marvelous display, loads of computing power, and a rock solid warranty from a great company...Look no further.
