| calbear81's Full Review: Iomega Zip 250 External SCSI Drive |
I decided to purchase a SCSI Zip 250 External Drive because I was living off campus in an apartment and I needed a storage device to transport files between school computers and my home computer. Known for its widespread use and ease of mobility, I turned to Iomega for the solution to my problem. The new generation Zip 250 drives are a major improvement over the old Zip 100's because the disks now hold 2 1/2 times as much data and the SCSI version is up to 6 times faster if you use a decent SCSI Adapter.
The Zip 250 Drive is also compatible with old 100 MB Zip disks although performance with old disks will be significantly lower than with the 250 MB disks. I would recommend the Zip 250 drive for either students or small business owners who need to constantly move large files around from one location to another. However, 250 MB is considered very little compared to the amount of data that can be stored on a regular CD-Rom. This brings me to another point. I chose not to buy a CD-Burner (even though it would've been $50 cheaper) because a CD-Burner wouldn't have been convenient to use to transport files back and forth because of the long time it takes for the CDs to be burned. Also, my school didn't have CD-Burners readily available for students to use.
The total price of my SCSI Zip Drive setup came out to be around $200. I paid about $150 for the drive and $50 for a quality Adaptec SCSI Adapter. I also purchased a 4 Pack of Zip Disks for $50. Although I have also found that it is not that easy to find Zip 250 disks around, they are almost always available if you shop online. Also, if you're using a PC and can't find PC Formatted Zip 250 disks, you can always get MAC Zip Disks and reformat them with the included format utility.
The software included is very good and the installation wasn't that hard at all. The SCSI Adapter auto-detected and installed and I recommend getting one from Adaptec, the most trusted and respected name in SCSI. You have to make sure that the power is on to your Zip Drive before you start your computer or else it might not detect it. I recommend that after you install the zip drive, you hop onto the IOMEGA website and download some of their new software for the Zip Drive.
All in all, the Zip 250 External SCSI Drive has been a great tool for me as a college student. Users who need to work with files between home and work will find the Zip Drive to be an indispensable tool. The Zip Drive also makes backing up files a piece of cake and can help you restore all those important files after your system crashes. I highly recommend it and I have had no technical problems with it thus far. Iomega also has a new Zip CD Re-Writable Drive if any of you guys are out to get a burner.. =) Burn Zip! Burn!
