REVISED-Free email with 15MB space

Written: May 25 '00 (Updated Nov 02 '00)
Pros:15MB of space for files, emails, etc.
Cons:No "bulk mail" folder, no ">" in email replies, slow sometimes

I am a regular user of Visto's email services. The 15MB of space is an enticement for me. Not many web based email accounts offer more than 5MB and having 15MB is a blessing if you get a lot of emails. I like the combination of calendar, email, address book and news all in one package. Like most web-based emails, it has the ability to retrieve your POP emails and thus, you can communicate from anywhere where you have internet access. And, they also have wireless access, meaning you can access your visto.com email from your mobile phone.

They also have the option of allowing others to view your calendar and appointments and thus allow sharing of information. Of course, access to it are password enabled. You can upload files onto Visto, which makes file sharing easy between users. Right now, they allow you to increase your disk space if you refer friends to Visto.

I like Visto because of the 15MB of space. I like the ability to upload files and check my calendar for appointments and tasks. Of course, a lot of other email services do that too. You can also set up bookmarks there although I hardly use it as I find MURL to be a better online bookmark program. If you want a lot of free disk space not linked to email accounts, I'd suggest going to freediskspace.com, which gives you 300MB of disk space. X:drive gives 25MB and driveway 100MB, which I found to be the fastest online storage for uploads.

In order for visto to work, you must must javascript enabled as navigation between it requires javascipt. Sometimes it may be slow to download and they do take it offline sometimes for upgrade and maintenance.

Although they don't have a bulk email folder like a lot of other services, they do allow you to "block" senders from your inbox. But, you will first have to click on the message to open it before the "block" button is available. Hopefully they will implement the bulk email folder later. Occasionally, I do get the occasional spam but not as much as the daily dump of it at hotmail. And, they do have a filter system where you can filter out potential spam by specifying various criterias.

You can choose the look of the visto account to either having a listing of the emails (up to 50 per page) or having a "preview" option which also shows the email under the scrollable list. Some people may find it useful to determine from reading the first few lines of the email whether it's worth their time to read it or not. But, since it only previews the message you are selecting, there really isn't much of a value to me. I can see the entire message by just opening up the email.

Another nice feature of visto is their email alert. You can set up an alert for whatever criteria you decide. If you want to be notified of emails from a particular sender, visto can send you an email to whatever address you specify, whether it be to a mobile phone, ICQ, pager or another email account. That's nice for those on the go.

I thing I don't like about visto is that when replying emails, it doesn't seem to put in the ">" to specify the previous email so it's a bit of a pain for the reader to distinguish the replies.

On the main "Start" page, they also have headlines of the news so you can click on the link to read it in another window.

And, if you have more than one web-based email I suggest going to a web site called cnbc.com, where you can check a list of email accounts as well as bank and investment accounts. On their web site, you can set up a portfolio of stocks to track, and the best thing about this site is that you can also set up an "account tracker", in which you can have access to all your web based email accounts, bank accounts, investment accounts, affinity programs, etc. And, visto.com is one of the email sites you can check. It's great because you have a glance at any email updates and changes to your account. So, check out the account tracker at cnbc.com!

All in all, I'm quite satisfied with it and am currently using it.
