Before I start let me say that I love the zip drive, and that I would never use a floppy disk again. Although I think very highly of this product, however, I have a few problems with it. That's why I think you should hear me out before just immediately clicking that little "not recommended" button on the left hand side. Let me start with what's good about it.
Iomega released the zip drives a few years ago, with the intention of capturing an audience of people who were sick of running out of space on their floppy drives, and just needed something better. They found it with the 100 meg disks that came with the zip drives. Quickly, the zip drive became a phenomenon, and before you knew it everyone had one. Especially in the crowd I associate with (graphics designers, web designers), this product was a godsend.
Not only is the zip drive useful for transferring large files from one computer to another, but it is also useful for putting whole programs on another computer! The cost of my zip drive was 100 dollars, and the 100 meg disks that come along with it cost anywhere from 5 to 10 dollars each, which is very reasonable considering the usefulness of it.
Now for the bad. While I absolutely stand by the zip drive in general, I think that the external version of this drive is horrid. I probably went through about 2 or 3 externals before I realized that I should just get an internal one. The problem with these is that they break easily, in my case at least, and that using the slow parallel port, which this used for awhile before switching over to USB, is really just prehistoric. My first external zip drive got what we like to call "the click", where it just kept incessantly clicking and then died on me. The others just flat out broke.
While I love the zip drive in general, I think that the external version of this wonderful invention is a pain in the ass, and that you should just go with the internal version. I sincerely hope that you found this review useful if you are considering buying this product.
