| efirts's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS T700r |
Dell's new 700MHz Pentium III-powered Dimension XPS T700r is one heck of a SOHO desktop. It's speedy-though not as fast as several Athlon-powered models we've tested. Still, it's hard to argue with a WinScore mark of 147. It has just about every conceivable option you'd want, except for a CD-RW drive (you can order one for $199 more).
This Dimension is so packed with features, it still gets high marks for value despite its $2,828 price.
Since Intel delayed the rollout of its 820 chipset in late September, yet released its Coppermine Pentium III processors on schedule in October, vendors who wanted to introduce 700MHz Pentium III models with Intel chipsets were left with second choices. One choice is the 810e chipset, which supports a 133MHz system bus, but which includes integrated video. Another is the choice Dell went with in this Dimension, the venerable 440BX chipset. It's limited to a 100MHz system bus.
Neither the 810e nor the 440BX chipsets support Rambus memory, the type to be supported in the 820 chipset, once it makes its debut. In other words, performance should be better for 700MHz (and 733MHz) Pentium III-powered PCs once the 820 chipset becomes available. Whether the new chipset will close the performance gap that exists between Athlon-powered PCs and Pentium III-powered PCs remains to be determined.
