Relying on Creative Labs reputation with sound cards, how could I go wrong with their pc-dvd? Looking at the other review ratings, I must have bought a lemon from Creative Labs. My pc-dvd did not even last me six months of minimal use.
Something must have been wrong with it from the start since it never seem to work quite right. I thought it was my inexperience with this type of device that was hindering my dvd viewing, but after buying another brand after giving up on my battle with Creative Labs and them not honoring their year manufacturer's warranty, I realized that it was the pc-dvd all along. I have never had any trouble with my new brand (Toshiba, btw).
At the time this pc-dvd was purchased, most video cards did not support dvd like some advertise now. I had to buy a decoder card before I could even try to watch a dvd movie, which this was not clarified with Creative Lab's documentation. I remember contacting business friends on ICQ, browsing the internet for tips on playing pc-dvds, and finally I found a local friend that realized what my problem was and told me I still needed to buy a decoder card or I couldn't watch the movies.
I'm not a hardware specialist, so I was perplexed at what he was even talking about! I think the Creative Lab box should have said "Decoder Card Not Included" or something to that affect so I wouldn't have wasted my time and money on it. My friend browsed the internet and found a decoder card (Sigma Designs II which is still working well for me on my new pc-dvd), and I ordered this extra hardware required to play my dvds.
The time passed between purchasing the pc-dvd and the time I received and installed the decoder card was about three months, so I really had the device working only close to three months before it died completely. Even after installing the decoder card, I had to fight with the dvd, pray, and even bawl a little to get it to work.
After its death throws were finished, I contacted Creative Labs because it was under a year manufacturer's warranty, and I still had the receipt and documentation of when and where I purchased the equipment, and I wanted it replaced. They replied more or less that it was my problem and that they were not going to honor their warranty. Just the insult to the injury I needed.
After this experience, I will never buy a Creative Labs pc-dvd again, nor will I ever recommend one to a single soul. I have worked in the electronics manufacturing business for over ten years, and if one of our customers were treated like I was, they would have lost their job. Creative Labs lost me as a customer.
Hopefully this will not happen to anyone else, and I will probably be raked over the coals for this epinion, but it's the truth and a horrible experience to lose all that money and time for a device that should have been scrapped at the factory.
