If you want to build a website look no further than Geocities! Owned by Yahoo!, Geocities is an easy way to create a website for the amateur. Granted your url may look very funky and long, but that is a tradeoff that must be made for creating your own webpage. Of course, this site is geared towards the amateur since it features so many HTML tools for making a site. In general, the site hosts a variety of neighborhoods that give the user a home to place his/her site.
These sites range from finance to fashion, space to cyberspace. Here are the different categories that show Geocities' strength in providing a huge atmosphere of community. Like America, it is a melting pot of interests. Many different people find their home in the Geocities community.

Certain tools help the user create his/her site. Their are plenty of templates that the starter can use to start. Whether the user wants to start from scratch, he/ she may. But the different templates that are available include Celebrity Fan Page, Children's Page, which would get kids involved, writing your own online Diary, compose a family tree, start a site on Finance and Stocks, invite people to your dance (teen-oriented), a hobby page, a favorite links page, etc.
But Geocities warns that the Pagebuilder takes around 3-5 minutes on 28.8kbs modem. I suggest closing other programs when this event is being run. I have tried running the Page builder with some other large programs, (other browsers, with Photoshop, Word and Excel) only to have my system crash suddenly.
Even on faster connections, I did not see a faster load time with the page builder. But eventually when it did run, I felt it was easy to create and start a webpage. Even if the page is primitive at first, the user can easily add to the page. Whether through his/her own HTML code, or through the Yahoo wizard, that helps create the page, a webpage can be easily made
Other features that are offered in the Geocities site is the File Manager, where users can upload up to 15 mbs of file on the site. It is easy to upload and gives the user the option to upload anything, regardless of whether it will be put on his/her page. I find this very useful, storing important information on the account.
How to sign up? If you are already a Yahoo! member then you can simply log into the Yahoo account and travel your way to Geocities.com. You are already enrolled, but you have to create a location for where your webpage will be. Simple details but they are necessary.
I recommend Geocities for the amateur user, for the less serious user. If you are a professional looking for a professional website try any web compiler and get your own domain. Geocities is geared toward the HOME page, thus for the individual and not for profit making ventures. Plus,Geocities is not exactly a powerful system. The creator can add java applets, counters, guessbook etc. But it is limited to an extent.
Geocities is good for the personal user. I really like its usability and simplicity. There are many different sites to review, both interesting and boring. I also enjoy reading others websites and learning about their passions.
