There are other auctions out there besides eBay??? Just kidding! I know there are, but none can even come close to competing with eBay. EBay leads the pack when it comes to on-line auctions. (By the way does anybody know how they got their name?)
For me it all started with the home-run race of 1998. I just knew I had to have some souvenirs of it. I stumbled around with search engines and purchased a couple of Bamm Beanos through an on-line collectibles dealer and bought the commemorative coin at QVC. But then I stumbled on eBay. I was able to purchase all five commemorative St. Louis Post-Dispatch papers from on-line dealers. I was able to purchase collectible pins, Christmas ornaments, buttons, trading cards, etc. I could get anything I wanted at very reasonable prices.
After that I realized that eBay would be a great place to pick up gift items for my family and friends. I got many neat football cards for my brother who collects them. I got an interesting book for my dad about the history of his home town. I found collectible apple crate labels for my mom. I found the Roy Orbison "Black and White Night" video for a friend of mine. I do quite a bit of historical research and have been able to pick up many, many great books at eBay. The possibilities are endless.
EBay has gotten some negative press about scammers out there. If you haven't used eBay yet, you should know that eBay is not responsible for the authenticity or existence of merchandise anybody is selling. It says that right on their front page. They are simply providing a medium for people to buy and sell. That is it. I have to say that I was ripped off once by a guy selling trading cards. I guess maybe he was selling the same items over and over. I paid him, but never got the cards. It was only a two or three dollar item so I didn't bother over it. A couple months later I saw him selling at Yahoo Auctions. I thought, why not, I'll bid on his cards and see what happens. Well I won the auction. When I contacted him, I told him I would pay him as soon as he sent me the items from our previous transaction. I never heard another word. I believe eBay must have kicked him off, so he tried to sell at Yahoo. I do know eBay tries to monitor that sort of thing, but it is impossible to keep up with thousands of buyers and sellers. Just the other day there were over 4 MILLION items up for sale!!!! The only other problem I ever had, was the seller actually DIED before he sent my item. Someone in his family e-mailed me back. I told them to forget about it, it was a small item. It was the last thing they needed to worry about.
Well, anyway, if you haven't tried eBay, you should. It is my first shopping selection any more. I have a virtual yard sale at my fingertips and I love it!!!
