| mommyknows's Full Review: Cirque Smart Cat Touchpad |
When I bought the Cirque Smart Cat in late 1998 I just knew that by the year 2000 everybody would have a touchpad, and the mouse would be obsolete. Unlike most of my prophesies this one hasn't come true yet, but it may someday. The Smart Cat touchpad is superior to the mouse in just about every way.
Instead of rolling the mouse around on a mousepad, you use the Smart Cat by moving your finger around on the touchpad's surface. To click (like you would the left mouse button) you tap your finger once on the pad. To double click, you tap your finger twice. Tap it and hold to highlight, drag, or draw. It's very easy and it gives you excellent control, especially when working with graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro.
The top right corner of the Smart Cat is sort of raised and of a different texture. Tap here once to activate the "right click" feature. In addition, there are two buttons on the bottom that serve as left and right mouse buttons. There are also two buttons on either side of the touchpad's surface that you can program to perform any number of different tasks. To be honest with you though, I've never learned how to do this.
Probably my favorite feature of the Smart Cat is the ability to scroll up and down a page or from side to side simply by running your finger along the edge of the touchpad, and along the bottom. There's a raised groove to guide you.
The Smart Cat comes with a lifetime guarantee, but it seems indestructable. I've spilled all sorts of things on it, without any consequences, and my one-year old has been fairly abusive with it a time or two, but it keeps coming back for more.
At 4" x 4 1/2" the Cat takes up less space on your desk than a mouse and mousepad, and once you get used to using it (it took me about a minute and a half) you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
