Micron Does Well

Jun 29 '00

I recently purchased a Micron Millennia (P3-866) via Micron's website. I had been pricing computers for previous 3 months. After having a Dell in 1996, a Quantex in 1998, I decided to try the Micron this time. The website ordering was easy, although Micron suddenly began charging sales tax the week before I finally ordered mine (no doubt due to their alignment with Best Buy). The system I ordered is fairly loaded...256RAM, CD-RW, DVD, ZIP, 19-inch monitor, etc. Also, I paid extra for UPS 3-Day shipping.

I received immediate emails from Micron, advising me of the approximate shipping date (7 to 10 days from the order date) along with an email from a sales rep assigned to me. Six days later, I received notice that shipping had occurred via UPS. I was given the tracking number so that I could follow the shipment. Unfortunately, UPS sent one of the three boxes to an incorrect city, thus only 2 boxes made it within the 3-day shipping that I paid extra for. I contacted Micron immediately via email--my sales rep told me to call customer service (too bad she could not handle the problem for me) and was very disappointed because I was told that they "are not in the shipping business" and therefore would not refund the difference of regular UPS vs. 3-day UPS (less than $20!). I refused to accept that answer and eventually, after much argument, they agreed to refund the difference in shipping cost to my credit card. At least they finally understood what I was saying...I paid extra for specific shipping and did not receive it. Because I did not deal with UPS directly, it was Micron's responsibility to assist me with shipping problems. They eventually did.

The new system was relatively easy to set up...easy to read connection ports and simple instructions. Some hardware manuals were not included however, making it more difficult to know the specifics of those items. When I first signed onto the system, it froze during the Windows set up and I had to call Micron Support. After a short wait, a rep helped me through the problem--basically resetting the system. All was well after that until I tried to open the Internet Explorer browser. The "Micron Internet Service" set up screen would appear each time (no browser anywhere) despite that I originally selected "NO MICRON INTERNET SERVICE" when ordering the system. Without a preassigned password, I could not even sign on in order to cancel the service. I called Micron Support again, and waited for over an hour on hold. Not having enough time to wait, I had to hang up before talking to anyone. Later the same day, I tried again. I waited on hold for almost 2 hours before finally talking to a rep. We tried many different things to discontinue the Micron Internet Service screen from coming up when clicking on the browser--I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with the rep. Finally, he admitted he had no clue what else to do. He suggested I call Micron Internet Service 800# and ask them about it. Grudgingly I did, but the service rep there knew exactly what the problem was and within seconds, it was removed and Internet Explorer worked perfectly. They were surprised that the regular Micron support people did not know the solution and promised to contact them with the answer.

The one other disappointment I have with my Micron system is that none of the "pre-ordered software" was installed correctly. Microsoft Office had to be re-loaded, the SoundBlaster card had to be re-installed, Norton Anti-Virus was not installed, etc etc. Luckily, they do send all the CDs/disks so that I was able to handle this inconvenience. I did try to call Micron support again when a driver seemed to be missing. While on hold (45 minutes), I was able to find the item I needed on my own so I never talked to anyone about it.

All that being said, the new system is incredible. Very fast and very easy to service. The case opens on one side, making it simple to get inside without disconnecting all the plugs. The fan is a slight bit louder than my old Quantex, but I have grown accustomed to it now.

I am hopeful that no other problems arise as time goes on. I'd do it all again despite the long waits on their 800#, and the inconveniences of setting things up myself. The Millennia is a great system.
